In our article of 19 July 2012, http://www.fih.ch/en/news-3812-big-brother-is-watching, we explained about the resources that would be available to the umpiring team at the Olympic Games in London and how the Video Umpire system would operate.
To show you how Video Umpire went for both Men’s and Women’s Olympic competitions, we have compiled an overview of the statistics.
Men
38 matches.
8 Umpire Referrals.
61 Team Referrals, of which 31 were upheld (51%), 28 were rejected (46%) and there were 2 No Advice Possibles (3%). This calculates to an average of 1.60 Team Referrals per match, or just more than three referred decisions for every two matches.
To put this into perspective, at the Olympics the Umpires, between them, made around 70-80 decisions per match for free hits, penalty corners, penalty strokes, goals and re-starts after goals.
From the time of the incident which caused the referral through to the decision being given on the pitch, the average time for all Referrals was 79 seconds. This is the best average time that the Men have achieved since the World Cup in New Delhi (IND) in 2010.
The most successful teams in terms of upheld Team Referrals were Australia with 6 upheld from a total of 8, closely followed by Argentina who were successful on 5 occasions from their 7 Referrals.
Women
38 matches.
6 Umpire Referrals.
49 Team Referrals, of which 29 were upheld (59%), 18 were rejected (37%) and there were 2 No Advice Possibles (4%). This calculates to an average of 1.30 Team Referrals per match, or just less than 4 referred decisions for every three matches.
From the time of the incident which caused the referral through to the decision being given on the pitch, the average time for all Referrals was 100 seconds. This is marginally higher than the average time the Women achieved at their World Cup in Rosario (ARG) in 2010.
The most successful teams were Belgium with a 100% record from their 2 Referrals, Australia who was correct on 8 occasions from 11 Referrals and New Zealand who referred on 8 occasions and were successful 7 times.
The Argentina Women‘s team was the only team in both competitions not to have a single Team Referral.
As is usual, after each event where it is in operation, the processes and procedures are reviewed with the aim of continually trying to improve Video Umpire system. The review of the Video Umpire statistics are part of this process.
