The FIH has named David Luckes as its Director of Sport. Luckes will take up his new role in February of 2013. Luckes comes to the FIH with a wealth of international and Olympic sporting experience, most recently having served as the Head of Sport Competition for the London Olympic Organizing Committee (LOCOG). Luckes takes over the post from Roger Webb, who recently retired after several years of dedicated service.
Luckes is also a former hockey player with 125 international caps to his credit with England and Great Britain. He appeared in three Olympic Games (1992, 1996 and 2000), two World Cups (1994, 1998) in addition to three European Cups, a European Indoor Cup and one Commonwealth Games appearance.
“We are thrilled to welcome David to the FIH family,” said Kelly Fairweather, CIH CEO. “David brings a wealth of international sport experience to his role after holding one of the key positions within the 2012 Olympics. His background as a former hockey player made him a perfect match to be the FIH Director of Sport.”
With LOCOG, Luckes was responsible for the running of all sporting events at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games relating primarily to building and developing the teams and operational plans to deliver the sporting elements. Luckes was in the post with LOCOG since 2005 until the successful conclusion.
Prior to joining LOCOG, Luckes was instrumental in London’s bid to land the Olympic Games, serving as the Senior Sports and Venue Manager during the bidding process from 2003-2005. In this role he Defined the sports concept for 28 Olympic and 20 Paralympic sports and was a liaison with the International Federations regarding technical specifications for sports and venues.
Luckes also worked with the British Olympic Association between 1997-2003 and prior to that was an Assistant Editor at BBC 5 Radio.
Luckes is married and has a step daughter, 12, a daughter, 7, and another child due in November.
