Today, hockey history is being written! It is the first day of action for the new FIH competition, the Hockey World League. Today in Prague, Czech Republic, six women’s teams will take to the pitch to officially kick off the new event.
The historic first game is between Scotland and Turkey. The first tournament in the Czech Republic is a joint event with both men’s and women’s teams taking part. It will conclude on Sunday. In total, there are 11 Hockey World League Round 1 tournaments scheduled to take place this autumn.
The new Hockey World League will be divided into four rounds and will ultimately serve as a qualification tournament for both the World Cup and Olympic Games. Men’s and women’s national teams from 60 countries are expected to take part in the competition with over 2,000 players, 350 matches and 6,000 caps accumulated.
UPDATE: You can wow your hockey friends with the following trvia fun fact years from now. Scotalnd beat Turkey, 12-1, in the historic first World League match. In other game action on Day 1, Belarus topped France, 9-1, and Italy won against host Czech Republic, 6-0.
