Both the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos have put on a spectacle at day one of the Lanco International Super Series, recording wins against Pakistan and Malaysia respectively at day one of the tournament in Perth tonight.
With the tournament trying new rules for the first time, including 9 players per side, bigger goals and only 15 minute halves, the fans were treated to some impressive goals and an overall open free flowing games
The Hockeyroos started their LANCO International Super Series keen to make the most of the new rules. Their first two shots on goal were spectacular but not fruitful, getting the crowd excited with the pace of the match.
Australia were awarded a Penalty Shootout, a one-on-one chance for the attacker to take on the goalkeeper, due to a Malay defender’s exuberant tackle in front of goals. Casey Eastham weaved skilfully around the Malaysian keeper, opening the Hockeyroos’ scoring in the 10th minute.
Malaysia defended brilliantly during a sustained barrage of close in shots on goal, Australia well and truly outnumbered and unable to pierce the defence.
Malaysia’s fortunes shined when Noor Hasliza Md Ali deep in defensive territory took on Kobie McGurk for a brilliant solo effort. She was rewarded with a goal, high into the top right corner out of Toni Cronk’s reach.
Australia remained gallant in attack, setting themselves well across the backs to create a scoring opportunity, but to Malaysia’s credit their defence was excellent in keeping the Australian’s to only two goals in this match.
It was Malaysia's second defeat of the day, having lost 3-1 to India in their previous match.
The Kookaburras match proved to be an even more attacking event, with some great goals scored by both Australia and Pakistan.
With the rules undoubtedly suiting the Kookaburras style of play, they appeared to be in for a big night early on.
Mark Knowles found the back of the goals first for the Kookaburras followed closely behind by a bustling Glenn Turner forcing his way into the Pakistani’s goal, giving them an early two goal lead.
A penalty corner awarded to Pakistan in 9th minute resulted in a goal by their captain Shakeel Abbasi. The scores levelled when Pakistan’sAbdul Hassem Khan converted off a penalty corner only minutes later.
Kookaburras captain Jamie Dwyer scored a screamer in the 14th minute on the edge of the circle, smashing high and wide into the corner of the goal.
The second half was played at a frenetic pace, running end-to-end the teams were relentless in their efforts to score. Numerous intercepts, turnovers and shots on goals, saw both teams come close on several occasions, but unable to add to the score line.
The fans certainly got what they wanted with fast paced action resulting in many goals, with Kookaburras coach Ric Charlesworth saying the new rules had a desired effect on the game, with a much more open play and excitement.
“It was the sort of score I would have expected in a half-hour game. But we missed some second half chances and I was disappointed with our finish. But in the end it was an attractive spectacle and there was some spectacular play. The players are still finding their way around circle and by Sunday we should see a lot more chances at goal. It is a new experience for all of us,” said Charlesworth.
In the other men's fixture of the day, New Zealand's Black Sticks proved themselves to be too strong for India, battling their way to a 6-3 victory.
