Welsh Hockey Union: Wales have named a young squad for the European Nations Trophy in Azerbaijan in early September. It is an unchanged line-up from the one that competed in the Celtic Cup tournament in Edinburgh.

The squad was to have been named after the three-Test series against Ukraine last weekend, but the series had to be cancelled.

The Wales outfit is a young team and will rely on the experience of captain Georgie Sharples and goalkeeper Michelle Thomas. Six of the squad are members of last year’s successful Under 21 European Trophy side and these youngsters provide the impetus for an exciting period to come in Welsh hockey.

“This group has worked very hard and are looking forward to the challenge. The cancellation of matches against Ukraine was disappointing as it would have given our youngsters further experience,” coach David Griffiths said.

The team travels to Spain this week for an eight-day acclimatisation camp, before departing for Baku in Azerbaijan on 2nd September.
