Germany have beaten Australia 3-0 (0-0) on the second day of Berlin’s 4-Nations-Tournament. World Champions Argentina were also successful, defeating Korea 1-0 (0-0).
On Sunday the unbeaten teams from Germany and Argentina play off for the first place while Australia face Korea.
The Hockeyroos, who had drawn 3-3 with Argentina on Thursday, had great opportunities especially at the beginning of the first half but Germany’s goalkeeper Kim Platten did a great job. As soon as the second half has started, Natascha Keller smashed in a backhand pass coming from Lydia Haase. Australia seemed a bit tired and did not perform as well as they did against the World Champions. In the 62nd minute Germany won a penalty stroke after Eileen Hoffmann was tackled in the circle. Team-captain Fanny Rinne, playing her 300th international match, took the shot and doubled the lead. Two minutes before the final whistle the umpires awarded another penalty stroke after the ball has touched an Australian defender’s foot near the goal-line. Keller did not hesitate and flicked the ball into the top left corner.
The spectators did not see as many chances and action in the circles as they have seen in the previous encounter. Surprisingly Korea were the better side in the first half creating a few more opportunities than Argentina. However the game winning goal was scored in the 54th minute when Rosario Luchetti converted a great pass coming from Luciana Aymar. Afterwards the second half was interrupted for at least 20 minutes due to heavy rainfall.
