The Gilmour Sports Indoor Players of the Year awards were both won by Menzieshill players, goalkeeper David Braithwaite and striker Amy Hyslop.

Braithwaite`s skill between the posts has helped Menzieshill to win the championship while Hyslop's phenomenal strike rate has undoubtedly saved the women`s side from relegation.

One of the foundation stones of Menzieshill`s success has been a defence that has conceded only around two goals a game, quite a feat in the indoor game, and Braithwaite's domination of his circle has been a major contributor.

Braithwaite, who has 27 Scottish caps to his name, reacted with typical modesty to news of the award: "I am very pleased, of course, as there are some very good goalkeepers out there, and to be singled out for this award is very satisfying." He went on: "However, I cannot accept all the credit for this, I believe the whole team has defended very well and this is reflected in the fact that we have kept four clean sheets this season."

Perhaps the finest clean sheet performance was against Western Wildcats a couple of weeks ago when the 3-0 scoreline was a tribute to a series of fine saves by Braithwaite in the Menzieshill goal.

But the 31 year old Internal Auditor for Lloyd TSB Group is already looking forward to next season. "I hope to continue my good form into next season and get back into the National indoor squad once again." The selectors would do well to consider the Menzieshill goalkeeper as Scotland strive to return to the `A` Division of the European Cup.

In contrast, West of Scotland Institute of Sport athlete Amy Hyslop is the scourge of defences - even the top teams -at the other end of the pitch. Her tally of 33 goals this season is a remarkable achievement, given Menzieshill's lowly position in the division.

Asked about her strike rate, Hyslop also paid tribute to others: "The excellent service I get from my team mates, particularly Alison and Sam Sangster, has contributed to the number of goals I've been able to score."

In the very first weekend of the indoor season the 21 year old History student gave an early inkling of her lethal touch with a double hat-trick in the 6-3 win over Clubsport. But the real achievement of Hyslop is that she can do the same against the top sides, as shown by her three goals against Bonagrass Grove, the most they have conceded all season.

In the final match of the season Hyslop scored five in an 8-4 victory over Grange, and thereby secured the top goalscorer award as well.

Curiously Hyslop may never have graced the indoor arena at Bells at all as she explained. "My own team Giffnock no longer play the indoor game, but I wanted to play and Menzieshill made me an offer I couldn't refuse."

Like Braithwaite, Hyslop has ambitions for her foster club and also beyond: "I want Menzieshill to maintain division 1 status, but for me personally I`d love to go up a step and play for Scotland."
