On April 2 in Barcelona, hockey extended its reach to include a unique group of athletes with the first-ever Ciutat de Barcelona hockey tournament for mentally disabled hockey players.
In total, there were 12 teams and 140 players coming from several different hockey clubs from around the Barcelona region including Atletic Terrassa, Egara, R.C Polo, FC. Barcelona and C.F. Junior.
The tournament drew many fans and supporters. Barcelona Mayor, Jordi Hereu, and FIH President, Leandro Negre, both attended the final game. Overall the tournament was a big success thanks to the support of all the clubs. The Catalan Hockey Federation provided the umpires with even UDP umpire Jonathan Gomez whistling a few games.
“It was an amazing experience to see the players in action,” said Negre. “It serves as a reminder to us all just how far the reach of athletics can extend and what a positive impact it can have on people.”
At the end of the event, the trophies were handed out and every participant received a souvenir medal for a keepsake.
