The magnificent year by the Kookaburras has continued to receive the recognition it deserves, with Ric Charlesworth named the 2010 Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) coach of the year and the Kookaburras named AIS team of the year at an award ceremony in Canberra last night.
Kookaburras co-captain Jamie Dwyer was also nominated for AIS athlete of the year, however the award went to Olympic aerial skiing champions Lydia Lassila.
Under Charlesworth’s guidance the Kookaburras were simply unstoppable in 2010 as they became the first team in history to win all three major tournaments (World Cup, Champions Trophy, Commonwealth Games) in the same year.
This included their first World Cup gold in over 24 years, a record 11th Champions Trophy victory and their fourth straight Commonwealth Games gold medal.
Amongst their major tournament wins was a great level of consistency, winning 31 out of 36 matches during 2010 by an average winning margin of 3.6 goals.
The Kookaburras have won all major titles available since the appointment of Charlesworth as coach at the beginning of 2009 and will look to continue this form towards the 2012 London Olympics!
