While the Commonwealth Games are only a few short weeks away, the best hockey talent in Australia will be on display this weekend in Brisbane as Finals Week of the 2010 Men’s Australian Hockey League begins.
While state pride will be on the line, players will be going above and beyond to impress national coach Ric Charlesworth at the AHL given that the Commonwealth Games squad will be selected following the tournament.
Although it has been Queensland and Western Australia compete in the AHL grand final over the last three years, Victoria appears to be the front runners in 2010 as they sit undefeated at the top of the points table.
The competition has been very even to date, with every team recording at least one win each already.
In what promises to be an exciting week of hockey, all members of the Kookaburras teams who won the Hero Honda FIH World Cup earlier in the year and ABN AMRO FIH Champions Trophy a few weeks ago will be taking part in the action.
