Hockey Australia are honored to announce that the 2004 Athens Olympic Games Men’s gold medal Australian Hockey Team have today been recognized at the 2010 Team Sport Australia Awards by the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
In what was a watershed moment for hockey in Australia and the end of one of Australia’s most notorious sporting hoodoos, the gold medal win at the 2004 Athens Olympics has been viewed as one of Australia’s greatest ever gold medal victories.
For more than 30 years, the men’s team has been ranked amongst the top four nations in the world. The Australian men’s team has won eight Olympic medals since first competing at the Games in 1956, with the 2004 gold obviously the most significant. This is in addition to its nine World Cup medals (two gold), 23 Champions Trophy medals, including a record equaling nine gold medals, and hat-trick of gold medals at each of the Commonwealth Games.
Remarkably, the Kookaburras are the only Australian team, male or female, to win a medal at each of the last four Olympic Games. Placed in the top four in every Olympic Games between 1984 and 2008, and never having finished lower than sixth, they have been Australia's most consistent performer in any Olympic team sport.
Today Brent Livermore, captain during the 2004 Olympics final, accepted the award on behalf of the team with fellow players Travis Brooks and Stephen Mowlam also in attendance.
“This is obviously a great recognition for what we achieved in 2004. It is always pleasing for the team, coaches, and everyone who was involved to be recognized amongst other great Australian teams as so much hard work went into the team winning the gold medal,” said Livermore.
Hockey Australia wishes to express their congratulations to the 2004 Men’s Olympic hockey team.
