During the recent 46th Nehru Hockey Tournament in Chandigarh, the Jawaharlal Nehru Hockey Tournament Society, in association with Hockey Chandigarh and Hockey Punjab, organized from 13-15 November 2009 an Umpires Seminar. The Chairman of the FIH Umpiring Committee, Ermanno Silvano was invited to be the Course Conductor.

More than 30 Umpires, including 6 young ladies, were invited from all over India; the participation of three Umpires from Dubai (UAE) and three from Sri Lanka made the Seminar “international”. Local Umpire Coaches and some players also attended the Seminar.

During the Tournament the Umpires were coached and trained by Ermanno Silvano regarding the latest interpretations of the Rules, with the use of self-explanatory video clips assisting in a better understanding of them. After the class sessions the Umpires moved to the hockey stadium were they had the possibility to see some of the Tournament matches. The following day a detailed review of the games took place with an interactive session between the Conductor and the participants.

Ermanno Silvano said: “I’m delighted to see the strong commitment of these young and promising Umpires; some of whom travelled by train for more than 30 hours just to be here. They are very keen to learn and improve. I really see potential in some of them to become the next top Indian International Umpires! On behalf of FIH Umpiring Committee a special thanks goes to the Jawaharlal Nehru Hockey Tournament Society and the Secretary Mr. Kukoo Walia for organising and hosting this Seminar and for their ongoing activities in the development of the Umpires across India”
