The Australian men’s team has concluded its five test series against Malaysia on a somewhat sober note after recording a two all draw against the host nation earlier this week in game five of the series.
Malaysia also forced a 3-3 draw with the Kookaburras during game three of the series played entirely in Malaysia.
Regardless the Kookaburras still walk away victorious, winning the best of five series 3-0 to take some winning form into their final preparation for the ABN AMRO Hockey Champions Trophy which will be held in Melbourne from 28 November-6 December.
The Kookaburras won game one of the series 3-1, game two 5-1 and game four 3-1.
With key play makers Jamie Dwyer, Grant Schubert, Brent Livermore, Rob Hammond, Luke Doerner, Mark Knowles, Eddie Ockenden and Des Abbott all missing from the squad, coach Ric Charlesworth continued to find depth during this tour, debuting three new players in Jonathon Charlesworth, Matt Gohdes and Matthew Swann.
Amongst several positives, the form of striker Glenn Turner during the series was encouraging, scoring several goals to supply Charlesworth with additional firepower.
The Kookaburras will now regroup in Perth to prepare for the ABN AMRO Hockey Champions Trophy, for which the final squad will be selected on 10 November. The squad will play a two test series against Spain over the weekend of 21-22 November before heading to Melbourne for the Champions Trophy.
Malaysia Series Summary:
Game 1 – Kookaburras 3 Malaysia 1
Game 2 – Kookaburras 5 Malaysia 1
Game 3 – Kookaburras 3 Malaysia 3
Game 4 – Kookaburras 3 Malaysia 1
Game 5 – Kookaburras 2 Malaysia 2
