The Kookaburras have been dealt a setback ahead of the World Cup Qualifiers, with Victorian goalkeeper George Bazeley withdrawing from the squad of 18 due to injury.

Bazeley has a tear in the lateral ligament of his right knee and is expected to be on the sidelines for 3-6 weeks.

WA goalkeeper Ross Meadows will replace Bazeley in the World Cup Qualifier tournament to be held in Invercargill, New Zealand from 24-29 August.

The Kookaburras will face New Zealand and Samoa, with the winner gaining direct access to the Hero Honda FIH 2010 World Cup which will be held in India from 28 February – 13 March, 2010.

Bazeley said that although he is disappointed, he will now focus on doing everything possible to reclaim his spot when he returns.

“Obviously it is very disappointing, particularly on the eve of a big tournament such as the World Cup Qualifier. But I will now focus on my recovery to make sure I come back without any complications,” said Bazeley.

Meadows said he is looking forward to making the most of his opportunity.

“It is exciting to be given this opportunity as it gives me a chance to show the coaching staff and selectors what I am capable of,” said Meadows

The World Cup Qualifier will give Kookaburras coach Ric Charlesworth a further opportunity to expose his players to the rigours of international hockey prior to the ABN AMRO Hockey Champions Trophy – Men 2009 tournament which will be held in Melbourne from 28 November-6 December.
