The women’s team of Australia has finished their four test series against Japan on a positive note winning 4-1, playing their best match of the series to draw the series with two wins each.
The match, played in Japan, was delayed by several hours as the pitch was unplayable due to an extreme downpour.
When play finally commenced the conditions were still trying given the extreme humidity.
However the Hockeyroos seemed unfazed, scoring two early goals to set up a commanding lead which they maintained throughout the match.
Hockeyroos coach Frank Murray said the team's ability to convert their chances provided the winning edge.
"They actually had more penalty corners, circle penetrations and shots on goal however we were the ones who were able to convert early in the match. Our defense performed equally well in what was an overall solid performance." Said Murray.
Murray also said that despite sharing the wins throughout the series, he is pleased with the outcome given the invaluable experience he believes his team has gained by playing in almost identical conditions to that expected in Beijing.
"Overall we got a lot out of this series. The last match in particular was played in unbelievably humid conditions, so this was good experience to simulate the similar conditions we can expect in Beijing."
"Japan is a very capable side. They are not like the Japanese sides from the past where people think they are walk overs. Their coach has been in charge of the group since mid 2006 and they have had some great results since then including fifth place at the World Cup. They are a genuine chance to win a medal at the upcoming Olympics, so to split the series with two wins each in the trying conditions which they are used to playing in is pleasing. In particular, it was good to finish off on a winning note during the last match and I believe the group has gained invaluable experience from this series."
