Great Britain hockey announced the names of the 18 athletes who are to take part in the trip of the GB Women’s team to Terrassa, Spain, between 11-14 January.  As well as training, the squad will also play one test match and two practice matches.

Six of the 24 athletes selected in Great Britain’s Olympic Training Squad will not be making the trip to Terrassa;  Rebecca Herbert (Leicester), Anne Panter (Leicester), Lisa Wooding (Chelmsford), Hayley Brown (Canterbury), Alex Danson (Slough) and Beth Storry (SCHC).  Herbert and Wooding have been named as non-travelling reserves whilst Panter is unavailable due to university exams.

Head Coach Danny Kerry is eager to begin what will be a busy 2008 which will culminate with the Olympic Games in August.  “We are looking forward to our short trip to Spain. The squad has had a break from each other over December in order to refresh themselves for the Olympic preparation ahead. We are only taking 18 members from the training squad of 24 and will be looking at some new combinations whilst giving some further experience to the younger members of the group”.

Sir Clive Woodward, Elite Performance Director for the British Olympic Association, has been invited to join the team in Spain and coach Kerry says “We are looking forward to forging a good working relationship with Sir Clive and welcome any thoughts and insight he may offer.”

The games against World No. 8 Spain will follow on from Great Britain’s trip to Argentina in November which saw some encouraging performances and included a 3-0 win against the world’s second ranked team.
