It’s a double whammy for Scotland as the two most capped players, Vishal Marwaha and Graham Dunlop, retire from international play.
With 22 years of experience and nearly 300 caps between them, Coach Mathias Ahrens put it straight: “There’s no doubt, they leave big holes to fill.”
Marwaha, who debuted for Scotland against France in August of 1996, said he knew he wanted to retire after the EuroHockey Trophy in Lisbon: “I’ve been playing for 11 years and it’s just the right time for me. There were personal circumstances as well; I’m starting my own business and things like that.
“Highlights have been my first Scotland cap, first GB cap and playing at the Commonwealth Games. I’ll miss the team banter the most and just being part of the team.”
Marwaha will still be taking the pitch with Western Wildcats and when asked if he’ll be seen directing things from sidelines, he said: “You never say never, coaching could be a possibility for me but at the moment I’m looking forward to playing for my club and having a summer off.”
Coach Ahrens sang praises for Graham, better known as Cheesy on the team, and explained: “I believe Cheesy is the best left back in Britain.”
Graham Dunlop or Cheesy, similar to Marwaha, played his first game for Scotland in the summer of 1996. It was the 5th July 1996 against Italy, to be exact.
Describing the two players on the pitch Ahrens commented: “Cheesy has a never ending positive presence on the pitch, he really motivates others. Vishal is a great leader too and is such a hard worker in the midfield.
“Vishal and Cheesy are both highly valuable players. Cheesy is the record holder as most capped players for Scotland and Vishal is second, which says a lot. Their experience was a big part of the team and will be missed.”
