The top teams in the men’s and women’s Premier 1 division clashed on the latest round of the England Hockey League, with Cannock (men) extending their lead and Fyffes Leicester overtaking Ipswich at the top of the women’s ladder.

The top two teams in Women’s Premier 1 met on Saturday and second placed Fyffes Leicester beat Ipswich 4-1 to move to the top of the table with Kate Sharland and Becky Herbert both netting braces.

On Sunday Leicester were surprisingly held 4-4 at Harleston, but Ipswich failed to take advantage losing 4-2 at home to Bowdon Hightown to now be three points adrift.

Chelmsford will join the top two in the Super Cup after wins over Sutton, 6-0, and Olton, 3-2. Their win against Olton saw the Olton coach Kalbir Takhar removed from the bench by match official Martin Gotheridge.

Canterbury have also all but booked the last place in the Super Cup. On Saturday they beat Trojans 3-1 thanks to a Hayley Brown hat trick and on Sunday they met Slough who having beaten Clifton the day before trailed them by three points. Two second half goals by former Slough player Anna Bennett gave Canterbury a 2-0 win although they were indebted to keeper Amy Tran who saved a Jane Smith penalty stroke when the score was 1-0.

At the other end of the table Clifton secured an important 4-2 win at Trojans on Sunday to move four points clear of the play off places. These are occupied by Doncaster and Harleston who themselves have a four point advantage over Trojans. Harleston picked up good points in draws with Bowdon Hightown, 3-3 and Fyffes Leicester, 4-4 while Doncaster won 3-0 at Sutton on Sunday.

The top two also met in Men’s Premier 1 and leaders Cannock went a long way to retaining their title with a 2-1 win over second-placed Reading. They are now six points clear of Reading with just three matches to play.

Third placed Loughborough Students easily beat Firebrands 5-1 and now need just two points from their last four matches to secure a Super Cup place.

Fourth-placed Guildford are also looking likely to be playing in the tournament on their home pitch after a 6-2 win at Chelmsford which saw Danny Hall net a hat trick. Hampstead beat Teddington 2-1 but with Canterbury beating Surbiton 3-1 and Old Loughtonians beating St Albans 2-0 they remain in the play off zone.
