The 2005 National Senior and Development Squads for Australian Men’s Hockey were announced today at the conclusion of the Australian Hockey League competition in Brisbane, as well as the team who will travel to Malaysia for the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in May.

All members of the 2004 Olympic Games gold medal winning team are included in the National Senior Squad, with the exception of Michael Brennan and Mark Hickman who have since announced their retirements. 2000 Sydney Olympic Games bronze medallist, Craig Victory, is also included in the 24-man squad.

Five players have been included in the squad for the first time – lethal penalty corner striker Luke Doerner, talented strikers David Guest, Eli Matheson and Matt Naylor, and Daniel McPherson who breaks into the group as the third goalkeeper.

All states have at least one player in either the National Senior or Development Squads, with Queensland and New South Wales best represented in the senior squad with eight and five players respectively.

The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup team will travel to Malaysia in late May to defend the title the Kookaburras won last year. Eighteen players have been named, with Luke Doerner, Eli Matheson and David Guest set to enjoy their international debut. The tournament involves six of the top hockey nations in the world, with competing nations and tournament dates to be confirmed shortly.
