Report by Sherlan Cabralis, PAHF Media Officer

Puerto Rico edged Dominican Republic 4-3 in sudden death penalty strokes to capture 11th position in the 5th Women’s Pan American Junior Championship in Puerto Rico.  After the match and 15 minutes extra time were unable to determine a winner, it came down to penalty strokes.

Both teams struck twice at the penalty spot from the initial five penalty strokes to bring the match to sudden death penalty strokes.  Alexandria Rodriguez converted her stroke putting the host in the lead, 3-2, but Norman Cristina Sanchez converted her stroke leveling the score 3-3. Sara Cherico then executed her stroke giving the host the lead 4-3; however, Beiry Abreau was unable to score her stroke giving Puerto Rico and their fans an exciting end to the torunament. Dominican Republic finished in 12th position.

Trinidad & Tobago made a statement by defeating Bermuda 3-0 to take 9th place in the tournament. The "Trini" ladies struck in the 6th minute via a well-executed penalty corner by Kristen Thompson to take a 1-0 lead. Two additional goals in the first half by Avion Ashton and Alanna Lewis put the game out of the reach for Bermuda. Bermuda finished in 10th position in the tournament.

Barbados defeated Jamaica 3-0 to seal 7th position in the tournament. Barbados played an excellent match and capitalised on their penalty corners. Two goals in the first half from Keisha Jordan and powerfully taken penalty corner by Tara Howard gave Barbados the lead 2-0.

Barbados had the better of the exchanges and was rewarded with a penalty corner in the 39th minute, which was blasted in by Joanna Davis. Jamaica finished in 8th position in the 5th Pan-American Junior Hockey Tournament.

Tomorrow will feature the top six teams.
