Two international countries both competing in the 2007 Pan American Games this summer will clash heads in Vancouver, Canada 24-30 May for 5 days of competitive hockey action. Both the Canadian Men’s and Women’s teams will play a 5 match series against the Chilean national teams on 24, 26, 27, 29 and 30 May.
Canada vs Chile is a likely match scenario in the Pan American Games, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 13-26 July this year. The winner of the Pan American Games automatically qualifies for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing China. The Chilean Hockey Federation is emerging as a strong hockey contender and will be a tough opponent in the Pan American Games. The Chilean Men are ranked 21st and the Women 23rd. Meanwhile the Canadian Men are ranked 16th and the Women 19th .Other Pan Am challengers are Argentina, Uruguay, and USA.
With youth field hockey programs running full swing in Vancouver, it presents a great opportunity for young hockey stars to see their national team champions play at home. Stephanie Jameson of Vancouver BC who played with the University of British Columbia Hawks remembers what it was like as a junior watching the national team play at home.
“I remember watching the national team play in a 4 nations tournament in Vancouver during their lead up to the '99 Pan American Games. It was so inspiring to see how intense and competitive the games were, and to watch some of my favourite players in action.”
The Canada-Chile series this spring will include opportunities to incorporate young field hockey kids into the event program, meet national team athletes, and sign autographs.
Hosting the Chilean Hockey Federation celebrates a special anniversary for Wright Field at UBC. On 13 July 2002 the first international match was played at Wright field when the Canadian men hosted Chilean men’s national team.
