|22||Pool B||2:30pm||CHN - ARG||0 - 2 (0 - 1)||Final|
Argentina narrowly defeated China 2-0 to win Pool B at Women’s ERGO Hockey Junior World Cup in Mönchengladbach. Both were on equal points before the match, knowing today’s winner will be qualified for the quarter-final stage.
The Leoncitas entered the pitch with passion and went after a quick goal. They gained an early penalty corner which was flicked home by Julia Gomes Fantasia. The two teams then battled the rest of the first half without scoring. The second half was more entertaining as play opened up which resulted in more scoring opportunities either side. However, both goalkeepers, Ye Jiao and Sofia Montserrat, did very well to keep the score at 1-0.
As South Africa had defeated Canada 6-3 on Pitch 2, China needed a win to qualify for the quarter-finals. The young and inexperienced Chinese team fought hard but struggled to keep up with their strong opponents. With three minutes remaining on the clock Gomes Fantasia scored from another penalty to give her Leoncitas a deserved 2-0 win.
Argentina face the USA in Thursday’s quarter-final with China taking on Ghana in the 9-16 placement round.
