While a draw was enough for the Jillaroos to qualify, New Zealand would have needed a win to keep alive their chances of reaching the top eight. The first half saw a very competitive match on Pitch 1. New Zealand earned an early penalty corner, but Brooke Neil could not get the shot away. Soon after, Australia won their first penalty corner but Madison Fitzpatrick’s attempt was denied by the Junior Black Sticks defence. However, Jillaroo top-scorer Fitzpatrick was successful a few minutes later with a penalty corner goal.
The Junior Black Sticks replied to level the score to 1-1 when Rhiannon Dennison deflected a penalty corner shot into the goal. Afterwards New Zealand goalkeeper Georgia Barnett made a tremendous save against Murphy Allendorf’s penalty corner shot keeping the game at 1-1 at halftime.
New Zealand returned to the pitch with enthusiasm. After two minutes of play Cass Reid scored from open play to make it 2-1. In the 49th minute Allendorf made it all square again when she pushed the ball over the line in a crowded circle. New Zealand, who had to win this encounter, earned a series of penalty corners but could not convert either of them.
Instead, Australia went up the other end and scored through FIH Young Player of the Year, Anna Flanagan. Three minutes were remaining on the clock. However, the Junior Black Sticks did not give up and came back into the game when Reid equalised in the last minute. Knowing that a draw wasn’t enough they pushed hard for another goal but could not get pass the Australian defence.
The Jillaroos finish on top of Pool C with seven points, India are second with six points. New Zealand finish third with three points, and head into the 9th to 16th placement matches together with Russia who have not yet been able to win points.
