Match Review

Russia v India 1-10 (0-5)

In the match between Russia and India, the Indian girls started off strong and never relented, never allowing their Russian opponents to get into the game. The scoring started in the seventh minute, as Vandana Katariya sunk a penalty corner for India's first goal of the day, and her first of a first half hattrick. The Indian team never looked back, and kept adding goal at a steady pace for the remainder of the encounter.

Katariya's hattrick plus a double from Poonam Rani in the first half added up to a 5-0 halftime lead, a comfortable advantage for the Asian representatives, and wholly deserved, as play rarely left the Russian half of the field and India controlled possession for long periods of time.

Less than a minute into the second half, Anastasia Miroshnikova was able to pull one back for Russia off the team's very first attack, catching India on the wrong foot, but the Indian team was back on track in no time, restroing the five goal lead two minutes later through Rani. A goal from Ritusha Kumani Arya, Rani's second of the day, a penalty corner conversion from Manjit Kaur and a Russian own goal drove the scoreline up to 10-1, a result that made it probable for India to reach the quarter-finals, but had them depend on the result of the Australia v New Zealand match that was ongoing in the main stadium.

Voices after the match:

Vladimir Kobzev, Coach Russia: " We have to score more goals and make fewer mistakes. Nevertheless, I am pretty proud of my team."

Chanu Sanarik Ningombam, Goalkeeper India: "We knew that we had to score a lot of goals because of the tight constellation in the pool with New Zealand. We played very well, their goalkeeper played well, and their players too, but in the end we needed lots of goals. Now we have to keep an eye on Australia and New Zealand. All in all, we are already proud of ourselves, independent of whether we reach the quarter-finals or not because we played very well."
