Japan eased to fifth place in the World League semi-final in Rotterdam as they had too much in the tank for Belgium to keep themselves in the mix for potential World Cup qualification.
Close range goals from captain Rika Komazawa and Shiho Otsuka put them in a great position, both players getting on the end of right wing crosses despite Belgian defensive pressure.
Shihori Oikawa slapped in a third goal from a penalty corner in the 44th minute to extend the lead to 3-0. Belgium got one back with six minutes to go via Anouk Raes whose reverse-stick shot took a deflection to deceive Ryoko Oie.
But it was too late to change the course of the match despite plenty of late pressure and a couple of corners. The fifth place finish for Japan means that while they finish outside of the automatic World Cup qualification places, they will be hopeful of potentially taking a lucky loser slot for The Hague in 2014.
