South Africa – Italy 1-1, 1-3 shootout (0-1 halftime)
Italy will finish the Investec Hockey World League Semi-Final well ahead of its 17th World Ranking position thanks to a 3-1 shootout win against South Africa in today’s placement game. The Italians now shoot into the fifth-place game at the event and keep a glimmer of hope alive to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.
The South Africans, who will play for seventh place, now face pressure at the African Cup as it is now their only way to make it to the 2014 Hockey World League.
Italy scored the only goal of the tentative first half with Guiliana Ruggieri scored on a penalty stroke. The lead endured nearly through the final hooter. But last-minute South African heroics from penalty corner specialist Pietie Coetzee sent the game to a shootout as she fired in a flick in the last minute of action.
Despite having the momentum from the last-minute goal going into the shootout, South Africa came out flat in the five-man showdown, scoring just once in four tries as Italy won clearly, 3-1.
