China – Spain 3-0 (0-0 halftime)
China became the third higher seeded team from the preliminary round at the Invested Hockey World League tournament to make it through to the semi-final game after a low-scoring 3-0 victory against Spain.
#15 Spain put in a good defensive performance against seventh-ranked China, especially Spanish goaltender Maria Lopez de Eguilaz Zubiria, who was put through the gears by the persistent Chinese attack. But despite their massive time spent in the Spanish circle, China was held scoreless for nearly 45 minutes.
It wasn’t until Meiyu Liang scored on a beautiful hesitation fake when a breakaway left her one-on-one with Lopez de Eguilaz Zubina. The goal loosened up the Chinese, who relaxed visibly after getting the initial goal. Mengyu Wang doubled the lead with 13 minutes left in the game with her penalty corner flick that was nearly saved, but ultaimtely had enough speed to power through to the upper corner.
Hongxia Li put the finishing touches on the win. She scored the 3-0 goal, her fifth of the tournament, on a simple tap in from the baseline to lift China to the quarterfinal win.
China will take on Australia in Saturday’s semi-final game. It is sure to be an entertaining game between the sixth and seventh ranked teams in the FIH World Ranking. Meanwhile, Spain will take on the U,S, in a game to determine who will play for fifth and who will play for seventh place.
