Spain – United States 1-3 (1-1 halftime)
The U.S. scored two late goals to power through to a 3-1 win against Spain at the Investec Hockey World League Semi-Final tournament. The Americans will now play in the fifth-place game, while Spain is bound for the seventh-place game.
The game was a big step for the Americans on the road to The Hague as they keep their hopes alive to earn a qualification should they not fare will at the Pan American Cup. The loss kills Spain’s World Cup dreams as the seventh place finish places them far too low to make it to The Hague.
The game was deadlocked at one at the end of the first half after the teams exchanged goals less than a minute apart in the 25th minute. The tie endured through much of the game and it looked like the game could be headed to a shootout when USA erupted with two goals in the last five minutes of regulation.
Katie Reinprecht scored the go-ahead 2-1 goal on a penalty corner to give the U.S. the lead with just over five minutes left and Rachael Dawson hit in the critical 3-1 goal to kill any hopes Spain had of sending the game into a shootout.
USA will meet Italy in the fifth-place game, while Spain will take on South Africa for seventh place.
