Match Review

China – Australia 1-4 (1-1 halftime)

Australia won its semi-final game against China with a 4-1 decision, ensuring a place in tomorrow’s final game and more importantly a berth to the 2014 Hockey World Cup in The Hague. The top three teams from this Investec Hockey World League tournament are guaranteed a spot in the World Cup.

The game was an even duel with both teams working hard in the surprising London heat, but coming away empty handed from their chances. It seemed only appropriate that it was tournament leading scorer Hongxia Li that broke the scoring silence when she scored her sixth of the event. Li received a spot-on long pass that left her one-on-one at the top of the circle, her hesitation fake, left her able to smack in the reverse shot.

But less than a minute later, Australia answered Li’s goal to tie the game at one when Ashleigh Nelson scored down low in the circle to send the teams to the break in a deadlock.

Australia pulled away midway through the second half, edging their lead up to 3-1 with patience and persistence. Claire Messent scored down low in the circle with 19 minutes left in the game, but it was still tense for the Hockeyroos to hold the slim one-goal lead with plenty of time for a hard-working Chinese side to sneak back into the game. It wasn’t until Georgie Parker scored seven minutes later that the Australians could start to relax and imagine their place in the final game.

Emily Hurtz put the finishing touches on the win, scoring with seven minutes left in the game and bringing the final to unrepresentative 4-1 score.

Australia joins the Netherlands, Germany, Korea and Argentina as a qualified team for the 2014 World Cup. Argentina is into the World Cup no matter where they finish in the semi-finals since they are higher-ranked than Rotterdam’s fourth-place finisher New Zealand. England could qualify for the World Cup today with a victory against Argentina. Should England lose today’s semi-final, the last qualification spot will go to the winner of tomorrow’s third-place game.
