South Africa – Spain 2-2 (0-1 halftime)
South Africa and Spain earned their first points of the Investec Hockey World League Semi-Final and kept the Group B standings in relative disarray finishing in a 2-2 draw in Sunday’s late game.
South Africa was clearly the superior team as their strong physical play dwarfed the Spanish through much of the game. Unfortunately for the South Africans the score was much closer than their play would indicate as they had problems converting their chances into anything that could show on the scoreboard.
The lack of South African conversion opened the door for Spain to take the surprising 1-0 lead when Carlota Penchame marched the ball into the D and went for the far corner to score with four minutes to go in the first half. Spain nearly held a 2-0 lead at the break, but after a video referral the late goal was disallowed giving South Africa a bit of a break before the break.
South Africa finally found the back of the goal in the 50th minute when Tarryn Bright scored a textbook penalty corner goal on a flick to end the South African’s offensive frustrations. South Africa sparked to life after the goal and peppered the Spanish net forcing the goaltender to put in overtime to keep the game even.
Pietee Cotzee gave South Africa their first lead of the game with nine minutes left when the world record holder for goal scoring converted a penalty stroke. But the relief was short lived as less than a minute later Spain’s Maria Romagosa erased the lead with a rifle of a shot and put the teams back in a deadlock at 2-2.
Group B is now an interesting mix of results with all four teams having tied their games today. At the top of the pack are Australia and England with four points and training behind are South Africa and Spain with one point each. The entire tournament takes a day off tomorrow before the last day of round robin action on Tuesday.
