Belgium – England 4-0 (1-0 halftime)
Belgium made history today after earning its first-ever Champions Trophy win and it could not have come at a better time as the victory keeps the Belgians’ hopes alive to return to next year’s edition. Belgium beat England 4-0 and will now play for fifth place against the winner of the Germany v- New Zealand game. The top five finishers in Melbourne are guaranteed a spot in next year’s Champions Trophy in India.
Belgium took the 1-0 lead when captain Jerome Truyens scored with eight minutes to go in the half, he finished the game with two goals. 15 minutes into the second half, It looked like England netted the equalizer in a bizarre angle effort, but the video umpire determined the ball had not entered the goal and the Belgium lead stood. Cedric Charlier and Truyens netted two late goals in the last 12 minutes of the game – sealing the historic win for the Red Lions.
England, which is having a sub-par tournament in Melbourne, will now look to avoid finishing at the bottom of the pack when it plays the loser of the Germany v. New Zealand game for seventh place.
The top five teams from the Champions Trophy are guaranteed a spot in the next edition of the event, which will be held in India. Argentina will join the field after winning the recently-concluded Champions Challenge 1 in Quilmes and two wild card spots will be granted by the FIH to complete the eight-team field for the next Champions Trophy.
