Scotland became the third team to earn a Quarter Final berth at the Electric Ireland FIH Champions Challenge 1 after hanging on for a 3-2 win against Azerbaijan.
It was a true back-and-forth affair packed with end-to-end action as the two evenly-matched teams battled for a place in the medal round. But in the end it was penalty corners that decided the game as only one of the five goals scored in the game came from the field.
Azerbaijan took the lead 10 minutes into action when Khatira Aliyeva put in the first penalty corner goal. Eight minutes later, Scotland’s Alisa Wyllie had the answer with her penalty corner goal.
Holly Cram kicked off the second half scoring seven minutes after the break to give Scotland a 2-1 lead. Just six minutes later, Scotland took its biggest lead of the game when Ali Bell scored on a deflection. Moments later, Azerbaijan converted a penalty corner to once again move to within one goal.
The last push to the final buzzer saw many scoring chances, including no less than five penalty corner chances, but neither team could find the goal as the 3-2 score stood through end.
Scotland awaits the winner of the Ireland vs. USA Quarter Final game this evening. Azerbaijan will play the loser of that match tomorrow in the first of two placement games.
